As I read the Shakespeare article it brought to mind my least favorite of his works, namely The Taming of the Shrew- you know, kate is beaten into submission by Petruchio until she becomes a suitable wife for him. I hate that! You know this was written way before the feminist movement- hopefully Elizabeth I never had to endure this production!

fascinating article I found also mentioned that there were evidently high leveles of mercury in Shakespeare's body upon death and that this could be the result of treatment for syphillis. Did he have syphillis? I guess in that time period I should not be surprised.

I read an interesting article today that talked about how much Shakespeare actually hated his wife and how it was a "shotgun" wedding- the bride, about eight years his senior, was already pregnant and he felt obligated to marry her. Do any of you Shakespeare scholars give any credence to this argument?

Have any of you heard about the man who is now pregnant? I do not know the full story but he and his wife are expecting a child and he is the one who is pregnant. Something seems wrong about this on so many levels. What do you think?

I heard on the news yesterday that the people in Zimbabwe went to the polls over the weekend to elect a new leader and there has to be a recount. What?!? Those people are literally facing inflation of about 10,000%- why would anyone think they did not want change and would stick with the status quo?

Have any of you read this book The Secret or seen the DVD? The premise is very interesting- basically that you can think and act yourself to wealth and success. Do you think this is possible- that all we have to do is have the right mindset and our dreams for success will be realized?

| amyhop | why can't adults learn a new language | 1 | Apr 2 2008, 9:00 AM EDT by blemons | ||||

In the United States we are all so focused on mastering the English language that we rarely take the time as a whole to learn any of the other world languages, and this makes us a minority across the world in that regard. I would love to learn a 2nd language but I don't know that I have the brain capacity as an adult to do that in the same way that I would have when I was a child. Why is this, and why do Americans make the learning of a 2nd language so unimportant?

I saw a story just a few minutes ago on my home page that archaeologists are finally going to start some much anticipated new excavations at Stonehenge. I am not very familiar with the backstory on these ancient ruins and wondered if there was anyone out there who had some relevant info on this that you could share.

It seems that there are more and more stories htroughout the world of people being discriminated against and ostracized because of the garb that they choose to wear. Muslim women in france are even being told they cannot cover their heads in certain places. What!?! Now we won't even let people practice their faiths in the clothing that they wear? How do you guys feel about some of these stories which seem to emerge with frequency more and more often?

Do you think that the US presidential election will have much of an affect on politics worldwide? It seems that for a while many world leaders sided with George W Bush but as the war in Iraq began to bog down many of them backed away. With new leadership do you think that many of these world leaders will once again seek the advice and friendship of the leader of the United States?

I am sure that many of you heard about the 18 year old girl from Florida who opted for breast augmentation surgery and died while on the operating table. I know that her genetic condition that caused this would have appeared in any surgery that she had, but it just seems a little disheartening that she had to die for this cause. And so many young girls are opting for this surgery! How do you guys feel about this? I think this is an interesting and modern philosophical question that needs to be addressed.
