Why is this such an integral part of every literature class in the high schools of America? I think there are much more fascinating works by Hemingway yet this is the one which is held up as the one to be studied and many of the others are ignored.

I have read a great deal of Sigmund Freud's studies throughout the course of my life and various courses that I have been involved with, yet I am still not sure why so many of his theories are based around sexuality. I am not so sure that I agree with the basis for many of his principles, although the research and development that he did in the venue of talk therapy has grown and helped a number of people throughout the years. Do you think that his theories still ring true today?

It seems that so much of what Chaplin was able to bring to the big screen is now a lost art? Do you think there are other performers out there who can exemplify his style and talent or do you all feel that this is a dead art with so much dialogue and action in films today?

I like the Hitchcock movies specifically because of the lack of gore. They force you to rely on using your brain versus just the typicall grossing you out scenery which is employed by so many in the industry today.

The cult of individual personalities is always, in my view, unjustified. To be sure, nature distributes her gifts variously among her children. But there are plenty of the well-endowed ones too, thank God, and I am firmly convinced that most of them live quiet, unregarded lives.
This Einstein quote has always confused me some. It seems to say that he prefers that everyone do their own thing and leave everyone else alone. Very odd.

I think I have read in several places that Einstein had a muddled personal life and estrangement from his children. Is this true? Did he end up marrying a cousin or something like that?

I was listening to a radio program just a little while ago and the guest was talking about how many in the scientific world suspect that Einstein regretted some of his findings, and later even tried to recant some of his work, due to his fear of what others would do with his discoveries. Do you think this could be true?

An intersting tidbit that I learned about Einstein this evening. . . he did not want atomic power in the hands of individual countries. Rather he preferred that the info about such things stay within the UN. Any thoughts on whether or not you think this would have been a safer option for the world?

I know that the scientific world is making new discoveries in labs and in the field each and every day. And I do find it amazing that they can now clone animals. But do I think that this is right? Again I applaud them for the steps they have taken to make this happen, but is this really the type of progression that we need? I am not sure. What is the value of cloning other than being able to say that it can be done?

Where I live our city is making a huge effort to preserve green space and to even create new Green areas out of parking lots and land which was previously a "paved paradise." But there are many critics who claim that this slows the progress of a community. I say not true- our green spaces are our little way of preserving nature and giving our kids something to hold on to and cherish. Who is right?

In a town close to where I live the big story of the day is that a six year old got in trouble with his teacher for calling her a hottie and saying he wants to touch her butt. Oh my gosh- and his father is a minister! Might be true what they have always said about preacher's kids. . . anyway, do you think this is something he should be punished for or forgiven because you know he probably saw junk like this on TV or maybe even heard it from an older sibling. How can you hold a six year old accountable for this?

I thought this site would be a great place to ask this due to so many philosophical minds getting on board. I would love to hear from everyone and find out how you feel about the death penalty. Do you think that it is acceptable under any circumstances? I do not- I do not think that it is my place to put forth a death sentence on someone. God will do that for us.

full of hot button issues today. . . so I raised the question about the death penalty but now I would also like to know how you feel about abortion and whether a woman should have the right to choose. I become very conflicted here because I do not think that it is my choice to kill another human but I do not necessarily want the govt telling me what I can and cannot do with my body. So I do lean pro choice, it's is just that I know this would not ever be the right choice fr me.

As I read the Shakespeare article it brought to mind my least favorite of his works, namely The Taming of the Shrew- you know, kate is beaten into submission by Petruchio until she becomes a suitable wife for him. I hate that! You know this was written way before the feminist movement- hopefully Elizabeth I never had to endure this production!

fascinating article I found also mentioned that there were evidently high leveles of mercury in Shakespeare's body upon death and that this could be the result of treatment for syphillis. Did he have syphillis? I guess in that time period I should not be surprised.

I read an interesting article today that talked about how much Shakespeare actually hated his wife and how it was a "shotgun" wedding- the bride, about eight years his senior, was already pregnant and he felt obligated to marry her. Do any of you Shakespeare scholars give any credence to this argument?

I am having a moral dilemma. I read a story yesterday about how in many cities the libraries are really cracking down on the numbers of homeless people who hang out in the library all day. I guess I can understand if they are disrupting others but for just simply being there? Aren't these public libraries?

Have any of you heard about the man who is now pregnant? I do not know the full story but he and his wife are expecting a child and he is the one who is pregnant. Something seems wrong about this on so many levels. What do you think?
